Story

After pulling out of the Reading Half due to injury, the snow resulted in the event being cancelled!

So, I’ll be running the Hadrian's Wall Half instead.

Why?

I was fascinated by where the most centenarians exist when I read the book ‘The Blue Zones’. Diet and exercise are well known practices for good health and concepts we can manage largely independently. However, some of the other principles, particularly 2, 7, 8, 9, could be clustered into social interaction. Yet social interaction is much less easy to control interactions as you get older.

I started volunteering with Engage Befriending and am raising money for their work. Their aim is to connect isolated older people with their local community through visits from a volunteer befriender. In 2017, 92% of those surveyed by Engage Befriending agreed or strongly agreed that they felt less isolated since being visited by their befriender.

By donating, you’ll facilitate the training of volunteers and raise awareness.

Here's hoping I break 2!

Mustard Tree Foundation Reading, Engage Befriending

The Mustard Tree's simple aim is to be a voice for the unheard in local communities across Reading and the surrounding area. We do this by identifying, incubating and resourcing local faith-based social action projects that address unmet or overlooked needs, and championing change in strategic contexts. We currently have four projects:

The Rahab Project - Offering support and advocacy to those involved in sex working.

Reading Lifeline - Counselling and support for those affected by infertility or baby loss during pregnancy or soon after birth.

Engage Befriending - Reconnecting isolated older people with their community through regular visits from a befriender.

Starting Point – Helping NEET young adults to access opportunities through mentoring and work experience.

We have been supporting our community for over 13 years, acting as a hub for 10 different projects, which cumulatively have impacted the lives of over 2,000 people and mobilised over 250 local volunteers.
