On the 27th August I will be moving to Sierra Leone for a year. When I am there I will be working with a paediatric physiotherapy charity, Enable the Children.
Enable the Children work with disabled children in and around Freetown. Cerebral palsy, developmental delay, autism, muscular dystrophy and orthopaedic challenges are some of the disabilities that the team treat. Enable the Children staff visit patients in their homes and teach families and caregivers how to support children with disabilities through play and developmental positioning.
In Sierra Leone, poor health care contributes to high rates of physical and mental disability. Widespread misunderstanding of disabilities, extensive poverty, traditional beliefs, and illiteracy often means the affected children are abandoned or rejected, both by their family and community.
I am very excited to be going out to join the team and make an impact in Sierra Leone!!
Your support will be greatly appreciated!
